Sonsbeek 2026 will take place in Sonsbeek Park, at partner institutions, and at various locations throughout Arnhem, transforming the city into a platform for new and existing works by eighteen artists from the Netherlands and abroad. The exhibition features twelve commissioned works, including site-specific installations, sculptures, and performances that broaden our perspective on art in public spaces.

The fourth edition of the Biennale Matter of Art, foregrounds art that is born out of necessity and shaped by a reflexive, embodied engagement with the conditions people inhabit every day. The biennale is cocurated by Jaroslava Tomanová, Jakub Gawkowski, and František Fekete.

Revoltes zijn lange tijd een sociaal gegeven geweest, gelinkt aan de opkomende arbeidersbeweging. Het is geen toeval dat Emile Verhaeren twee revolte-gedichten geschreven heeft. Maar vanaf de jaren 1960 zal de revolte vooral een artistieke invulling krijgen. Rond het thema van de sociale en artistieke revolte laten we een aantal kunstenaars in dialoog gaan: naast werken van Eugène Laermans, James Ensor, Maximilien Luce, Paul Signac, Frank Brangwyn… presenteren we hedendaags werk van Nel Aerts, Marcel Broodthaers, Jacques Charlier, Nikolaas Demoen, Palatine Demoen, Koba De Meutter, Francis Denys, Danny Devos, Dieter Durinck, Peter Morrens, Walter Swennen, Dennis Tyfus, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven en Benjamin Verdonck. In een apart luik presenteren we documenten van Belgische kunstenaarsinitiatieven op het snijpunt van artistiek experiment en sociaal engagement. Een artistieke barricade van Verhaeren tot nu.

Gastcuratoren Nadia Naveau en Nick Andrews, twee kunstenaars uit Antwerpen, en tevens docenten aan de academie aldaar, hebben een selectie gemaakt van kunstenaars met een nauwe band met Antwerpen. De tentoonstelling brengt een diverse groep kunstenaars en alumni samen om de thema’s die Van Gogh inspireerden te verkennen en hedendaagse reflecties op zijn zoektocht binnen zijn kunstenaarspraktijk te presenteren. Net zoals Van Gogh destijds actief de dialoog met andere kunstenaars opzocht, benadrukt deze expositie het belang van samenwerking en culturele uitwisseling.

Dénonce-moi brings together a series of portraits by artists from different generations, each probing the ways identity can be represented, interpreted, and inevitably fractured. The title, taken from a work by Pierre Klossowski, does not speak of accusation but of witness and connection.

The artwork “Op een rustige dag” by Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven (AMVK) began as a delicate pen drawing made on New Year’s Day—a quiet, reflective moment between past and future. In it, everyday objects like flowers and furniture are woven into a dynamic scene with arrows, orbs, and infinity signs, inviting viewers into a thoughtful visual journey. Later expanded and digitally reworked for the UZ Brussel hospital’s art wall, the drawing grew into a large-scale image, full of color and symbolic depth. It offers a sense of calm and hope in troubling times, acting as both a mental escape and a shared emotional space. AMVK’s work turns personal reflection into public healing, blending imagination and reality to spark moments of peace and perspective for all who pass by.

The exhibition Fabric: Textile and the Female Nude explores the connection between textiles and the female nude in art. Featuring works from early 17th-century masterpieces to contemporary pieces, the presentation at Villa Schöningen illuminates this and related themes across various artistic genres.

What Cannot Be Held brings together a diverse group of artists who, each in their own way, investigate the precarious position of humanity in a world that is constantly in flux. This exhibition examines themes including the instability of social relationships, the fragility of identity and the spaces between past, present and the imagination.

In the exhibition This Is Us, selected works from the four largest Flemish museums for contemporary art will be presented together for the very first time. Curator Fabian Flückiger chose artworks from the contemporary collections of M HKA, S.M.A.K., Mu.ZEE and M Leuven. With the artistic learning environment as his inspiration, he reflected on what these collections represent. What do they say about modern society and what can this teach visitors? The exhibition is divided into three chapters: The Art Institution, Living Spaces, and Telling Stories, which contain works by some fifty artists, more than half of whom live and work in Belgium. They also include seven new works, created specifically for this exhibition. This Is Us is a unique collaboration between the leading Flemish museums of contemporary art and Z33.

For its summer show Ulrik presents “Intimacy” – an exhibition held in three bedrooms within the Brooklyn artist loft, Taaffe. Founded by Elise Duryee-Browner and Damon Sfetsios in 2013, the loft has historically presented exhibitions, cafe nights, and parties. Ulrik began by linking three artists to three residents based on explicit and potential relationships in the pairing. By taking the contributors’ own bedrooms as the starting point and mise en scène, the theme of intimacy becomes text and subtext.

Since 1974, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven has been making drawings that emerge from her subconscious. She refuses to find logical meaning in her mindmaps. However, the drawings do enable her to make her perceptions and dreams more tangible. Kalligraphie was the first series of works Van Kerckhoven made upon her return home to Antwerp in 2007, following her residency at DAAD in Berlin and a stay in Shanghai.

The raven was, according to the Koran, the first teacher of man and the canaries in the coal mine have already done many heroic deeds. In short, these winged creatures deserve a worthy place.

We vroegen ieder van hen om op hun beurt iemand voor de toekomst te selecteren. Zo wordt de tentoonstelling ‘OUDE WIJN/NIEUWE ZAKKEN’ niet louter een terugkijken op wat ooit was, maar ook op wat nog komen zal.

Terwijl de collectie oude en moderne kunst van Vlaanderen terugkeert naar het gerenoveerde KMSKA (Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen), maakt de Vlaamse Gemeenschap zich op voor een tweede infrastructurele sprong voorwaarts die het museumlandschap verder naar een internationaal niveau tilt. Het regeerakkoord voorziet een nieuw gebouw voor het M HKA, waar ook de collectie hedendaagse kunst permanent zichtbaar zal worden binnen een consistent verhaal.

Titled after Sergey Kuryokhin and Sergey Sholokhov's absurd 1991 mockumentary from the last days of the Soviet Union, the exhibition Lenin Was a Mushroom examines the 1990s – which we might define here as the period between the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the 'War on Terror’. During the transition towards a supposed unipolar world, and in simultaneity with new international attitudes in the artistic sphere, film and video art of the 1990s broadened perspectives of the visual kind.

The flat Earth, considered a metaphor, a thought experiment, and a belief falsely ascribed to the past, serves as a point of departure for reflecting on the changing roles of science and communication. The artists featured in this exhibition analyze seemingly contradictory worldviews and identify political apparatuses, technological infrastructures, and social relationships that affect our knowledge and interpretation of reality.

The archival exhibition on the lower floor of the Kunsthalle focuses on a selection of women artists who have enriched the Kunsthalle Bern’s program with their substantial artistic contributions ever since its founding.

The real beginning of the 20th century was World War I. This war 1914 – 1918 was one of the deadliest conflicts in history with estimated 21 million deaths. In 1918 it was followed by the big 1918 influenza pandemic with over 100 million deaths.100 Years ago Paul Van Ostaijen (° Antwerp, 1896 - 1928) wrote his masterpiece “Bezette Stad” – “Occupied City”. The Covid – 19 pandemic seems to echo this catastrophe and will bring us to big shifts not in the least to the consequences of the climate crisis, the end of old capitalism and old politics. The real beginning of the 21st century Is now! We present work by artists of the gallery and some new and classic artists as they always have been the canaries in society’s coal mine.

The exhibition Living in Colour. A Common Ground Between Visual Arts and Interior Architecture displays a series of interdisciplinary encounters between the visual arts and interior architecture. It pays a particular attention to the activities in Antwerp, the educations at the Royal Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts and the education of interior architecture at the National Higher Institute for Architecture and Urbanism in the period 1956 till 1979.

The Road Is Clear is an exhibition/happening about the urgency of diversity acknowledgement. In the first of the series we address contemporary gender related issues mainly about female inclusivity. Here we state that diversity is not gender related.

Het tentoonstellingsproject Middle Gate II – Het verhaal van Dimpna is een samenwerking tussen het M HKA, Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen, en cultuurcentrum de Werft in Geel. Middle Gate 2 is het vervolg op de tentoonstelling Middle Gate van Jan Hoet in Geel in 2013.

Punk, Beeld & Storm in Antwerpen 1978-2018 is een tentoonstellingsproject van de Antwerpse Academie rond Punk en Postpunk in Antwerpen, hun invloed op de kunsten en hun actuele relevantie. Elke stroming behoeft ketters. Veertig jaar nadat de punkbeweging in Antwerpen een gezicht kreeg met The Kids, onderzoekt ‘Naughty Kids’ hoe de beeldenstorm van punk en postpunk nieuwe sporen trok door de meer klassieke beeldende kunsten, muziek, mode, literatuur en grafische vormgeving in Antwerpen. De tentoonstelling brengt ook in kaart op welke manier de Do It Yourself-attitude vandaag nog aan de orde is.

The first exhibition, entitled Urgent Conversations: Athens – Antwerp that inaugurated the temporary exhibition spaces of EMST simultaneously with the Program EMST in the World, is a coproduction of EMST and the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (M HKA).

This summer Yale Union and castillo/corrales swapped houses, people, and money. As part of this exchange, Yale Union made a show at castillo/corrales with Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven.

Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven ontwierp het bloementapijt 'Flower Power' in het kader van 450 Jaar Stadhuis. Het jarige stadhuis zelf krijgt aan de gevel ook unieke vlaggen, een tweede versie van het kunstwerk.

The exhibition The Welfare State does not look back with nostalgia at the welfare state in its ‘classical’ form as a utopian blueprint for an egalitarian (and homogenous) society in postwar Western Europe. It does not invite artists to ‘illustrate’ political and social engagement. But it does ask some fundamental questions. What is the ‘imaginary’ of the welfare state? Does it have a ‘form’? Can it be ‘shown’?

Curated by Chris Fitzpatrick and Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, this expansive exhibition will be the artist's most comprehensive presentation to date, with 178 works produced between 1975 and 2015. Many of these are being exhibited for the first time, installed in an interwoven and anti-chronological configuration to show Van Kerckhoven's practice as an interminable continuum of forms and ideas.

In her tenth solo exhibition at Zeno X, Van Kerckhoven integrates new installation art, video, collages and text in her own idiosyncratic way. We are carried off to a universe in which a synergy arises between the female body, mysticism and technology, and in particular with the digital.

For the first time in its history, Frans Masereel Centrum invites artists to reside at the centre and make new work in the workshop. During the stay the experiment is central. The artist is being challenged to critically interrogate the printing techniques and place them in relation to his/her own artistic work.

The Kunstmuseum Ahlen and the Museum Marta Herford present a joint exhibition project on the contemporary significance of collage and the related forms of expression in art.

Een erfgoedspoor loopt langs verschillende wijkhuizen in het centrum van de stad; een spoor van hedendaagse kunst loopt langs gekende en onverwachte locaties. Beide sporen kruisen elkaar geregeld, soms letterlijk, soms figuurlijk.

Mu.ZEE presents a solo exhibition of the Belgian artist Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven. In addition to being a painter, draughtsman and a performer, she is also an artist who has assembled a substantial oeuvre of multimedia work over the past thirty years.

The Renaissance Society will present four new bodies of work, including numerous new works on paper; an interactive computer animation; and a related series of computer generated prints. The new work will be supplemented with selections of work from throughout Van Kerckhoven's career.

Voor deze 'hedendaagse Ommegang voor het MAS'; baseerde Van Kerckhoven zich op een 16de-eeuws emblemataboek uit de bibliotheek van Museum Plantin-Moretus/Prentenkabinet.
